The New England area is renowned for its great skiing and snowboarding. There are literally dozens of ski resorts, ski areas and other winter sports resorts in New England, so it can be difficult to decide which ski area to visit.
There are several great ski areas located just minutes from Boston. And what's better is that many of these Boston area ski resorts and ski areas are very affordable in terms of their lift ticket prices, ski equipment rental rates and skiing or snowboarding lesson prices.

Nashoba Valley Ski Area
The Nashoba Valley Ski Area is located about 20 miles northwest of Boston, off Route 495. With its 17 trails and 9 ski lifts, situated on 52 acres, the Nashoba Valley Ski area is an ideal destination for skiers and snowboarders who are looking for a ski area that's close to Boston and affordable.
Nashoba Valley's holiday and weekend lift ticket prices are $44 for adults and $42 for kids age 12 and under. A weekday lift ticket is priced at $34 for adults and $32 for kids age 12 and under. Group discounts and half-day lift ticket discounts are available. Season passes for the 2008-2009 ski season are $575 for adults and $525 for kids age 12 and under.
Private and group ski and snowboarding lessons are available. A private one-hour lesson is priced at $70, while a group lesson is $35 for one hour. Group and private ski lesson packages are also available, which includes ski equipment rental and lift tickets. Private ski lesson packages start at $90 and group ski lesson packages start at $70. A 24-hour advance notice is required for private lessons.
Nashoba Valley Ski Area also offers equipment rentals, a ski racing program, ski vacation programs, ski and stay packages, and more.
Nashoba Valley is not just for skiers and snowboarders. There's also a Nashoba Valley Snow Tubing Park, located about half a mile down the road from the main ski area. Snow tubing is a great family-friendly activity for a winter afternoon. Two-hour tickets to the Nashoba Valley Snow Tubing Park are $22. A package of six three-hour snow tubing tickets are $110.
Loon Mountain Ski Area
Loon Mountain Ski Area is located off Route 93 in Lincoln, New Hampshire, about two hours north of Boston. This New England ski area features 50 trails and 10 ski lifts, situated on 275 acres.
Lift tickets are $73 for adults, $63 for teens ages 13 to 18, and $53 for seniors and juniors age 6 to 12. Kids under 6 ski free with an adult. Novice tickets are also available for $35, giving new skiers access to the lower mountain learning areas. Season passes for the 2008-2009 ski season start at $449. A special college student season pass is available for $399.
Loon Mountain Ski Area isn't just for skiers and snowboarders! This winter recreation area features snowshoeing, snow tubing, and ice skating. Other winter activities are also very affordable at Loon Mountain, with snow tubing tickets priced at $16 per hour for adults and $10 an hour for children.
For skiers and snowboarders who would like to visit Loon Mountain for a winter vacation, there's the South Peak Resort on Loon Mountain.
