How to Ski or Ride for Less During the 2008/2009 Season

Skiers and snowboarders headed to the Lake Tahoe region of California and Nevada can find deals and discounts on lift tickets at all the major resorts.

There are savings on ski lift tickets available through a variety of frequent skier and cross-promotional programs with the Lake Tahoe area resorts.

Lift-ticket Deals Include Two-for-Ones and Free Days for Active Military

Alpine Meadows: A $10 membership to the Alpine Club makes you eligible for 10 percent everyday savings and $39 tickets on 39 pre-selected days throughout the season. Without it, you'll pay $64 a day.

Boreal Mountain Resort: Pay for two days and get the third day free when you sign up for the iRide program. There's no cost, and you can register online. Regular all-day tickets are $47.

Heavenly Mountain Resort: Locals know what tourists don't: Buy your lift tickets at Savemart grocery stores (you'll find several in the Tahoe area) and save $15 off the peak-season price. Sign up online or in person for the Peaks reward program to get advance-purchase discounts and printable tickets that let you bypass lines at the base area. Heavenly is alone among Tahoe resorts in announcing its daily lift ticket prices, well, daily. Rates go as high as $85.

Homewood Mountain Resort: Take the bus and save $5; just show your ticket at the window. Check the Web site to pinpoint the 29 pre-selected days during the season when you can ski for just $29. Active-duty members of the military ski free any day. Regular daily lift tickets are $53.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort:Kirkwood burnishes its family-friendly image by offering free lift tickets to kids 12 and younger accompanied by a paying adult. Regular daily tickets are $72

Lake Tahoe Ski Savings for Seniors, Women, College Students

Mt. Rose: Bring a friend on Tuesday, when two people ski or ride for the price of one. Over 50? Join others in the "Over the Hill" crowd on Wednesdays and pay just $35. Women ride for $29 on Thursdays, while college students get $20 discounts during the week. Stop by a Northern Califoria Burger King to pick up a coupon for $7 off the price of a lift ticket regularly priced at $64. If you have several days, consider a $128 "weekend extender" pass good for three days on the slopes.

Northstar-at-Tahoe:If you're going to be around a week or more, join the Vertical Plus loyalty program for $119 to get a free midweek ticket and earn points toward discounts and awards. One of the best deals at the lake is the free lessons for intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders offered at 1:30 p.m. Monday-Friday on a first-come basis. Northstar's regular adult ticket price is $79.

Sierra-at-Tahoe: Ticket three-packs bring the cost of skiing down to $45 a day. Regular price is $69.

Squaw Valley USA: Lift tickets for kids 12 and younger are $10 any day. Squaw's frequent-rider program, $5 online or $10 at the ticket window, provides midweek discount and a fifth day free for every four days paid. College students who register online ride for $47 midweek except holidays. Active-duty memembers of the military ski free. Regular ticket price is $79.

Sugar Bowl: Join the Core Rewards program for $19 and save $10 off daily tickets for yourself and up to two friends. Check out the "general admission" program, available midweek, that offers free rental equipment and a two-hour lesson at any level with purchae of a $66 lift ticket.
