Planning to ski this season? Skiers will notice new expansions, upgrades, and enhancements at New Hampshire ski resorts, both on and off the slopes.

As skiers in New England dust off their boards and pray to the snow gods, several ski resorts in New Hampshire have been putting the finishing touches on major projects, including a new hotel, base lodge expansions, more trails, and better snowmaking. Here are some of the top improvements at New Hampshire ski resorts.

Hotel and Lodge Improvements

Construction is set to begin on the Glen House, a new hotel at the base of the Mount Washington Auto Road. Plans are for an 80-room New England mountain-style lodge, with an indoor pool and spa, conference facilities, dining room and sweeping views of the Presidential Mountains. Cross country ski trails will run directly from the Glen House to the Great Glen Trails network of trails.

The pub, base lodge and family room areas at Cannon Mountain will double in size, along with expansions to the rental shop and retail areas.

Pats Peak has spent $5 million in the past five seasons to expand its learning program area, develop a new lift-serviced terrain park, double the size of the Alpine Training Center and invest in new equipment: 400 new pairs of skis and bindings, 400 new pairs of boots, and 100 new snowboards. New "secret gladed areas" have been added that require "secret lines" to discover, some of which involve hiking.

New Trails and Better Snowmaking

Gunstock is completing a two-year $3.25 million dollar expansion, which includes a new chairlift and two new trails. The new lift will result in almost quadruple the uphill capacity. New snowmaking improvements will double the snowmaking capacity compared to three years ago.

Mount Sunapee purchased ten more energy efficient snow guns and cut in a new glades trail on Mount Sunapee's South Peak Learning Area. The main terrain park, renamed 603, will incorporate part of a third trail with four progression lines.

A focus on snowmaking improvements leads the way at Attitash for this winter. New snowmaking pipe, snowguns, flow meters and more are being installed. Enhancements are also being made to the base areas and lodges.

A New Canopy Tour

Bretton Woods is now home to one of the longest, year-round canopy tours in the United States. The tour descends over 1,000 vertical feet and consists of a series of tree-top zip lines, suspension bridges, and hiking trails. The tour concludes with the Williwaw Racing Zip, a dual, side-by-side zip line running into the base area. The Williwaw Racing Zip can also be enjoyed without participating in the entire canopy tour.

The snow guns are running and New Hampshire ski resorts are gearing up for the 2009-2010 season with new improvements and expansions. Check it out!
