Speed Skiing at Sun Peaks ResortEarth’s fastest skiers race March 1-4.
The RE/MAX FIS World Cup of Speed Skiing stages its only North American race at Sun Peaks in British Columbia, a competition in which skiers reach speeds of 110 mph.
I thought speed skiing was dead. But, according to the folks at Sun Peaks Resort, it’s not. Rather, speed skiing as a competition has become rare. In North America, at any rate. In fact, the RE/MAX FIS World Cup of Speed Skiing, which takes place at Sun Peaks in British Columbia on March 1-4, 2007, is the season’s sole FIS World Speed Skiing World Cup competition in North America. Billed as "the world’s fastest non-motorized sport," speed skiing’s top racers accelerate from 0 to 170-km per hour (that’s 110 mph for us Americans) in just 8 seconds. And close to 100 of them do it at Sun Peaks each March. "Imagine a ski racer wearing a Darth Vader like helmet, a bright red rubber suit and 240cm long skis," explains Adam Earle, Velocity Challenge Race Chairman. "Combine that with the rocket-like sound the racers make as they cut their way through the air, and it becomes a spectacle not to be missed!" The event is staged on the Headwall speed skiing track, with the finish line near the Sunburst mid-mountain lodge. The Headwall is steep. Real steep. That affords the racers the quick acceleration they need to attain the ultimate rush of skiing at ridiculously high speeds. It has to be seen to be believed. Event Schedule
